Oil Cooler
A transmission oil cooler pulls heat out of the automatic transmission fluid before it returns to the gearbox. We list 36 coolers from $27 to $457 by Dorman, Hayden, TYC and SKP, including direct fit units for Silverado 2500 HD and Silverado 1500 plus auxiliary coolers you can add for towing.

Why transmission fluid needs cooling
Automatic transmissions make heat as fluid moves through the torque converter and clutches. Hot fluid breaks down faster and loses its ability to protect internal parts. Many vehicles route fluid through a cooler in the radiator, a separate cooler in front of the radiator, or both. Trucks that tow or haul often run hotter, which is why auxiliary coolers are a common addition.
Signs of a failing cooler
Look for transmission fluid dripping near the front of the vehicle, wet or oily cooler fins, and damaged or corroded fittings. A clogged cooler can lead to higher fluid temperature, which may show on a temperature gauge if your vehicle has one, or as harsh or slipping shifts.
If a cooler inside the radiator fails, coolant and transmission fluid can mix. That needs immediate attention because it can damage the transmission.
Choosing a replacement or add-on
Positions here include front, which replaces a factory cooler, and auxiliary, which adds extra capacity. Some units come with brackets and hardware, while others are the cooler alone.
Match the line connection type to your vehicle, such as quick connect fittings or hose and clamp, and check the fitment table for engine and towing package. Top up the transmission fluid after installation, run the engine, and recheck the level using the procedure for your vehicle.
Oil Cooler questions
Do I need an auxiliary transmission cooler for towing?
If you tow often or pull heavy loads, an auxiliary cooler can help keep fluid temperature down. Many trucks with a factory towing package already have one. Check your owner's manual and the towing guide for your vehicle.
Can I bypass a leaking transmission cooler?
Bypassing removes cooling and lets fluid run hotter, which can shorten transmission life. It is best treated as a short emergency measure. Replacing the cooler is the proper repair.
How much fluid do I add after replacing the cooler?
Add the amount lost during the job, then check the level with the engine running and the fluid warm, following the procedure for your vehicle. Some transmissions have no dipstick and use a fill plug method instead.
