What the switch controls
On these Volvos the overdrive switch sends a signal that engages or cuts out overdrive. With overdrive on, the engine turns slower at highway speed, which lowers noise and helps fuel use. Turning it off holds a lower gear for towing, hills or engine braking. The switch is a small, low cost part that sees daily use, so wear is common on older cars.
Is it the switch or something else?
If overdrive will not engage or drops out on bumps, the switch is one suspect, but not the only one. The overdrive relay, the fuse, the wiring that runs through the shifter area, and the overdrive solenoid can all cause similar faults. Wires that flex every time you shift can break inside their insulation over time.
A test light or multimeter lets you check whether the switch passes power when pressed before you replace anything.
Ordering the right switch
Volvo used different switches across models, transmission types and years, so check the fitment table for your exact model, such as 240, 245, 740 or 940, and year. Compare the old switch's shape and connector if you can remove it first.
Disconnect the battery before working on the wiring. Handle the old wiring gently, since plastic and insulation on cars of this age can be brittle.
Overdrive Switch questions
Why does my Volvo overdrive cut in and out?
An intermittent fault often points to a worn switch, a broken wire near the shifter, or a loose connection at the relay or solenoid. Check the wiring and connections along with the switch before buying parts.
Can I drive my Volvo without overdrive working?
Yes, the car will still drive. You will just have higher engine speed at highway cruise, which means more noise and fuel use. Get the fault diagnosed so you can use overdrive again.
How much does an overdrive switch cost?
The switches in this group range from $8 to $24 depending on brand and model. Choose by matching your exact Volvo model and year in the fitment table.
