When to replace a tail light

A tail light assembly holds the brake, running and often turn signal and reverse lamps behind one lens. Replace the whole assembly when the lens is cracked or broken, the housing fills with condensation, or the reflector inside is burned or faded.

A cracked lens lets water in, which corrodes sockets and burns out bulbs. Broken tail lights are also a common reason for a traffic stop, so fix them promptly.

Choosing side, bulb type and style

Driver side is the left side and passenger side is the right side, viewed from the driver's seat. Check the Position field carefully, because many listings are sold as single sides.

Next, choose the bulb technology. LED assemblies have built in light sources, while incandescent and halogen units use bulbs, which may or may not be included. Some trucks need a load resistor or a different connector when switching to LED. Lens colors include factory red and clear, plus smoke options, and housings come in black or chrome.

Fitment by trim and body

Tail lights change with body style and model year. A Silverado 1500 and a Silverado 2500 HD of the same year may share lights, but a different cab, a dually or a mid-cycle refresh can change the part. Use the fitment table and compare the connector and mounting points with your old light.

Some states have rules on aftermarket lens colors such as smoke tint. Check your local regulations before installing tinted or clear lens styles.

Tail Light questions

Do tail light assemblies come with bulbs?

Some do and some do not. Each listing shows whether bulbs are included. LED assemblies have built in light sources, so they do not need separate bulbs.

Is the left tail light the driver side?

Yes. In the US, left means the driver side and right means the passenger side, as seen from the driver's seat looking forward. Check the Position field on each listing before you order.

Can I put LED tail lights on a truck that had bulbs?

Often yes, if the listing fits your truck. Some vehicles may show fast flashing turn signals or a bulb warning with LEDs, which a load resistor or compatible flasher can fix. Check the product notes.
