Cooling System

Fan Shroud

A fan shroud surrounds the cooling fan and directs its airflow through the whole radiator core instead of around the edges. We list 31 fan shrouds from $12 to $222 for 1989-2010 vehicles, from Action Crash, Mopar and TRQ, with fits for the Ram 1500 and 2500, Ford Expedition and Explorer, and Jeep Cherokee.

Why the shroud matters

Without a shroud, a mechanical fan pulls air mostly from the area around its blades, and much of the radiator gets little airflow. The shroud seals the space between the fan and the radiator, so air is pulled through the entire core. That matters most at idle and in slow traffic, when there is little airflow from vehicle speed. A missing or broken shroud can lead to overheating at low speed and weaker air conditioning when stopped.

Signs and position

Shrouds crack from heat and age, and mounting tabs break off, especially near the clips. Look for missing sections, a shroud that rattles or sags, or rub marks from the fan. Replace a shroud if the fan has touched it, since the fan can break. Some vehicles use a two-piece shroud, listed here as upper and lower, so you may only need one half. Compare the shape, clip locations and openings with your old part.

Fitment and installation

Pick your year, make and model, then check the fitment table for engine, radiator size and cooling options. On trucks such as the Ram 2500, gas and diesel engines use different shrouds, and towing packages may change the radiator. On many vehicles the fan or fan clutch has to come off first. When the new shroud is mounted, check that the gap between the fan tips and the shroud is even all the way around.

Fan Shroud questions

Can I drive without a fan shroud?

Short distances are possible, but the engine is more likely to overheat at idle and in traffic because the fan pulls less air through the radiator. Replace a missing or broken shroud soon.

Do I need to remove the fan to replace the shroud?

Often, yes. On many trucks the shroud cannot clear the fan blade, so the fan and clutch come off first. Some two-piece shrouds let you remove one half without moving the fan.

What is the difference between upper and lower shrouds?

Some vehicles split the shroud into two pieces so it can be removed around the fan. If only one half is cracked, you can replace that half alone.
