Cooling System

Your cooling system keeps engine temperature in a safe range and supplies heat to the cabin. This department lists 538 cooling parts from $5 to $411 for vehicles built from 1963-2025. Enter your year, make and model to find the radiators, water pumps, thermostats, hoses and fans that fit.

Cooling parts in this department

Accessory belt idler pulleys are the largest group with 144 listings, since on many engines the accessory belt also drives the water pump. Core cooling parts include radiators, radiator hoses, water pumps, thermostats, thermostat housings and expansion tanks. Airflow parts cover radiator fans, fan blades, fan clutches, fan shrouds and radiator shutter assemblies. Timing belt tensioners are listed here too. Brands include Gates, Action Crash, AC Delco, Dayco and Dorman. Chevrolet has the most coverage, especially the Camaro, Silverado 1500 and Corvette, followed by Ford and Dodge.

Warning signs of cooling trouble

Watch for a rising temperature gauge, coolant puddles, a sweet smell, steam from under the hood or a low expansion tank. A water pump often leaks from its weep hole or grinds as the bearing wears. A thermostat stuck closed causes overheating, while one stuck open leaves the engine running cold with weak heat. A fan clutch that spins freely when hot can cause overheating in slow traffic. A noisy or wobbling idler pulley should be replaced before it damages the belt.

Replacement and safety tips

Never open the radiator cap or expansion tank on a hot engine. The coolant is under pressure and can cause serious burns, so let the engine cool fully first.

Use the coolant type your owner's manual specifies, and bleed air from the system after refilling, since trapped air can cause overheating. When the water pump is driven by the timing belt, many owners change the belt and tensioner at the same time. Match radiators by engine, transmission type and whether a transmission cooler is built into the radiator tank.

Cooling System questions

What are the signs of a bad thermostat?

A thermostat stuck closed makes the engine overheat quickly. One stuck open makes the engine slow to warm up, leaves the gauge reading low and gives weak heat from the vents. Replace the gasket or seal with the thermostat, and refill and bleed the coolant afterward.

Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?

On engines where the timing belt drives the water pump, it is common practice. Most of the labor is shared, and a pump that fails later means removing the belt again. Check whether your engine uses a timing belt or a chain before you order.

Can I mix different types of coolant?

It is best not to. Different coolant chemistries can reduce corrosion protection when mixed. Use the type listed in your owner's manual, and if you are unsure what is in the system now, drain and flush it before refilling with the correct coolant.
