Cooling System

Radiator

The radiator sheds engine heat into the air passing through its core so your engine stays at a steady operating temperature. We list 33 radiators from $79 to $331 by CSF, Action Crash, Spectra Premium and OSC Automotive, with strong coverage for Chevrolet Camaro plus Silverado 1500, Ram 1500 and Tahoe.

Signs your radiator is failing

Look for coolant leaks at the tank seams or core, crusty green, orange or white deposits, a cracked plastic tank and a rising temperature gauge. Blocked fins or internal clogging can cause overheating when towing or idling in traffic.

A bad thermostat, water pump, fan or cap can also cause overheating. Pressure test the system to find the real fault before you buy a radiator.

Choosing a replacement

Most radiators here use plastic tanks with an aluminum core, the same layout many factory radiators use. Some offer an upgraded heavy duty core that is thicker than the original for extra cooling capacity.

Check the inlet and outlet locations, and whether your vehicle needs built-in transmission cooler or engine oil cooler fittings. Some units have quick-connect fittings that must match your lines. The fitment table covers engine, transmission and towing package differences.

Installation and refill

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Drain the coolant into a pan and dispose of it properly, since coolant is toxic to people and pets. Move over fittings, fan shrouds and brackets carefully.

Refill with the coolant type your vehicle requires and bleed air from the system as your service information directs. Run the engine to operating temperature, then recheck the level once it cools.

Radiator questions

Can I use any coolant in my new radiator?

Use the coolant type specified for your vehicle. Mixing different coolant types can reduce corrosion protection. Flush the old coolant out if you are changing types.

Should I replace the radiator hoses with the radiator?

It is a good time to do it if the hoses are old, soft, swollen or cracked. The system is already drained, so new hoses and clamps add little extra work.

Why is my new radiator still overheating?

Air trapped in the system is a common cause, so bleed it again. Also check the thermostat, water pump, cooling fan and cap. A blocked condenser or debris in front of the radiator can also limit airflow.
