Signs of a worn CV axle

A CV axle has a constant velocity joint at each end so it can turn while the suspension moves and the wheels steer. Each joint is packed with grease and sealed by a rubber boot.

The most common sign is a clicking or popping noise when turning, which points to a worn outer joint. A torn boot that slings grease onto the inside of the wheel is an early warning. Vibration under acceleration can mean a worn inner joint. A clunk when shifting into gear can also point to axle wear.

Choosing an axle or kit

Axles are listed by position: front, front left, front right, rear left, rear right and rear. Left and right axles are often different lengths, so pick the correct side.

Some listings include the axle nut and an ABS ring, which you need if your vehicle reads wheel speed from the axle. Several kits pair two CV axles with two wheel bearing and hub assemblies, or with bearings and seals. These kits make sense when both sides have similar mileage.

Install and fitment

Support the vehicle on jack stands and remove the wheel. Loosen the axle nut with the wheel on the ground or the brakes applied. Socket sizes in our listings include 36 and 41.

Read the fitment table for drive type, transmission and engine, since 2WD, 4WD and AWD versions differ. Use a new axle nut when one is supplied and torque it to spec. Do not let the axle hang by its inner joint during install.

Axle questions

What does a clicking noise when turning mean?

Clicking while turning usually means a worn outer CV joint. Replacing the CV axle assembly is the common fix.

Can I replace just the CV boot?

Yes, if you catch a torn boot early before dirt gets into the joint. Once the joint clicks, a complete axle is often the simpler repair.

Should I replace both CV axles at once?

Not required, but when both sides have the same mileage and wear, doing both saves a second job. Some of our kits include a left and right pair.
