CV Joint
A CV joint, short for constant velocity joint, lets an axle or driveshaft keep turning smoothly while it moves up and down and, at the wheel, steers. We list 38 CV joints from $32 to $262 for 1978-2021 vehicles, from Dorman, GKN Drivetech, SKP and Meyle, with fits for the Volkswagen Jetta, Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, and Ford Expedition and Explorer.

Symptoms of a worn joint
A worn outer joint typically clicks or pops when you turn sharply under power, such as pulling out of a parking space. A worn inner joint is more likely to clunk when you accelerate or let off the throttle, or cause a shudder under load. On a driveshaft, a worn CV joint can cause vibration at speed. Most CV joint wear starts with a torn boot, so check the boots when you inspect the joint.
Position and kit contents
Positions are listed as inner or outer, left or right, and front or rear. On some 4WD vehicles such as the Expedition, Explorer and Grand Cherokee, the listing names the joint's place on the driveshaft, such as front driveshaft at the transfer case or at the front axle. Kits differ. Some include grease, a boot clamp and a retainer ring, while bolt-on joints may add gaskets, ganged washers and bolts. Check whether a boot is included or sold separately.
Joint or complete shaft
Replacing a single joint can make sense when the shaft and other joint are in good shape, or when a complete axle is costly. A complete axle shaft is often quicker to install. Support the vehicle on jack stands, clean all mating surfaces and use new bolts or retainers where supplied. Tighten bolted joints and the axle nut to your service manual torque. Choose your year, make and model, and check the fitment table for drive type and transmission.
CV Joint questions
What does a bad CV joint sound like?
An outer joint usually clicks or pops on sharp turns while accelerating. An inner joint tends to clunk on acceleration or deceleration, or cause vibration under load. Grease thrown around the wheel area points to a torn boot.
Should I replace the CV joint or the whole axle?
If the joint is worn but the shaft and other joint are fine, a joint kit can work. A complete axle saves labor and replaces both joints at once. Many owners choose the complete axle for that reason.
Does a CV joint kit include a boot?
Some do and some do not. Read the package contents on each listing. If your old boot is torn or hard, replace it at the same time so the new joint stays clean and greased.
