Flex Joint

A flex joint, also called a flex disc or guibo, is the rubber coupling that joins the transmission output flange to the driveshaft and absorbs shock and vibration. We list 32 flex joints from $23 to $202 for 1968-2013 vehicles, from Febi, APA/URO Parts and Meyle, with fits for BMW 318ti, 2002, 135i and X3 models, Mercedes C230 and 300D, and the Lexus LS400.

Signs of a worn flex disc

The rubber disc softens drivetrain shock when you accelerate, lift off or shift. As it ages, the rubber cracks between the bolt holes and can tear apart. Common signs include a clunk when shifting into drive or reverse or when getting on and off the throttle, a vibration at certain speeds, and a delay before the vehicle moves. Look for cracks, torn rubber or bulging around the bolt holes, and replace it before it fails completely.

Matching your vehicle

Flex joints differ by diameter, number of bolt holes, bolt size and thickness, and some vehicles use two. Positions in this category are listed as front, which usually means at the transmission. Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for engine, transmission and drive type, since automatics and manuals often use different discs. Compare the old part number or measure the old disc when the listing gives dimensions.

Installation tips

Support the vehicle securely on jack stands and mark the driveshaft and flange so they go back in the same position. Many new discs come with a metal band that holds them compressed, which is removed after the bolts are in. Some discs have arrows that must point toward the flange arms. Use new bolts and nuts where supplied, and tighten them as the instructions say, often by turning the nut while holding the bolt. Check the center support bearing too.

Flex Joint questions

What does a bad flex disc feel like?

A worn flex disc usually causes a clunk when shifting into gear or changing throttle, and sometimes a vibration under acceleration. You may see cracks in the rubber between the bolt holes.

Should I replace the flex disc and center bearing together?

Many owners do, since both are rubber parts that age at a similar rate and the driveshaft is already partly removed. Inspect the center bearing while the flex disc is off.

What is a guibo?

Guibo is a common name for the rubber flex disc between the transmission and driveshaft, especially on BMW and Mercedes vehicles. It is the same part this category lists as a flex joint.
