Fuel Injection

Fuel Distributor

A fuel distributor meters fuel out to each injector line, and the right one depends on the injection system your engine uses. We list 17 fuel distributors from $40 to $1869, covering vehicles from 1980-2014, with parts from Bosch, AC Delco and Fuel Injection Corp.

What a fuel distributor does

On older Bosch continuous injection systems, used on cars such as the Mercedes 300SL, Audi 4000, BMW 318i and some Volkswagen models, the fuel distributor sits on the air flow sensor and splits fuel between the injector lines in step with incoming air. On GM central port injection engines, found in some Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Express 1500 and S10 models, a central unit feeds fuel through lines to poppet nozzles at each intake port.

Both designs do the same basic job: they decide how much fuel reaches each cylinder.

Signs of a failing unit

Common complaints include hard starting, a rough or hunting idle, misfires, poor fuel economy and a raw fuel smell. Internal leaks can let fuel drain into the intake after shutdown, which causes long cranking on the next start. On GM central units, a leaking line or nozzle can flood a cylinder.

Before you replace the distributor, rule out simpler causes such as low fuel pressure, a clogged filter, vacuum leaks or a weak ignition system. A pressure test is the usual first step.

Choosing and fitting the right part

Prices in this category run from $40 to $1869 because a CIS distributor and a GM injector assembly are very different parts. Match the old unit's part number where you can, and check the fitment table for engine size and year. A VIN check helps when your model had more than one engine.

Relieve fuel system pressure before you open any line, work with the engine cold, and keep sparks and open flame away. Replace seals, O-rings and copper washers that come off with the old part.

Fuel Distributor questions

What is a fuel distributor on a Mercedes or Audi?

On Bosch CIS cars such as the Mercedes 300SL and Audi 4000, the fuel distributor is a metering block mounted on the air flow sensor. It sends a measured share of fuel to each injector line based on airflow.

Is a GM spider injector the same as a fuel distributor?

On some Vortec V6 and V8 engines in trucks such as the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500, the central injector assembly with lines to each port does the job of a fuel distributor. Check the fitment table and part number to confirm you have the right assembly.

Do I need to adjust mixture after replacing a fuel distributor?

On many Bosch CIS systems the mixture setting should be checked after a distributor swap, often with a gas analyzer or duty cycle tester. Follow the service procedure for your engine. GM central port units do not have a mixture screw.
