What the idler arm does

In parallelogram steering, the pitman arm on the steering gear moves one end of the center link, and the idler arm holds the other end at the same height. The idler arm pivots on a bushing or bearing bolted to the frame, keeping the linkage level as you steer.

Rack and pinion vehicles do not use an idler arm. It is common on older trucks and full-size cars.

Signs of a worn idler arm

Common signs include loose or wandering steering, extra play at the wheel, clunks over bumps, uneven front tire wear, and a vehicle that will not hold alignment. You can check it by lifting up and down on the center link near the idler arm with the front end supported. Visible up and down movement means wear.

Worn steering parts affect control, so have them inspected promptly.

Choosing and installing

Many idler arms here are greaseable and some come pre-greased with a grease fitting and hardware. Some kits include a pitman arm and a bracket, which is useful since the two parts often wear together.

Match drive type, such as 2WD or 4WD, and year in the fitment table. Support the vehicle on jack stands, use a proper separator on the tapered joint, and torque fasteners to specification. A wheel alignment is needed after replacement.

Idler Arm questions

Should I replace the pitman arm and idler arm together?

It is common practice, since both carry the center link and wear at similar rates. Replacing them together restores even steering feel. Check both before ordering.

Do I need an alignment after replacing an idler arm?

Yes. Steering linkage work can change toe settings, so have a wheel alignment done to protect your tires and keep the vehicle tracking straight. Tell the shop which steering parts were changed.

How do I check an idler arm for wear?

With the vehicle safely supported, push up and pull down on the center link near the idler arm. Noticeable vertical movement or a clunk means the arm is worn.
