Steering parts covered

Linkage parts include 41 idler arms, 36 tie rods and complete steering linkage assemblies. For the steering itself there are 39 steering racks, 34 steering gearboxes and 34 steering dampers. Power steering parts cover pumps and hoses. Column parts include air bag clocksprings, ignition switches, ignition lock cylinders and lock housings. Brands include AC Delco, A1 Cardone, Moog, Dorman and SKP. Chevrolet leads the coverage, especially the Impala, Camaro, Silverado 1500 and Tahoe, with Dodge and Ram trucks, Jeep, Toyota and the Dakota covered too.

Signs of steering wear

Loose or wandering steering, clunks over bumps and uneven tire wear can point to worn tie rods or an idler arm. A whine that gets louder as you turn the wheel usually means low fluid or a failing power steering pump. Fluid on the rack boots or under the gearbox means a leak. Heavy steering at parking speeds may come from the pump or a slipping belt. If the horn or airbag light acts up after turning the wheel, the clockspring may be worn.

Fitment and safety notes

Rack and pinion steering and recirculating ball gearboxes use different linkage, so check which one your vehicle has. Trucks may differ by two or four wheel drive and by heavy duty package. Tie rods are listed inner or outer and left or right.

Get a wheel alignment after replacing tie rods, a rack or a gearbox. Before working on a clockspring or anything near the airbag, disconnect the battery and wait the time stated in the service manual so the airbag system can discharge.

Steering questions

Do I need an alignment after replacing tie rods?

Yes. Tie rods set the toe angle, and even a small change will make the tires wear quickly. Count the turns when you remove the old tie rod end to get close, then have a proper alignment done soon after the repair.

What are the signs of a bad clockspring?

A failing clockspring can turn on the airbag warning light, stop the horn working or make the steering wheel buttons stop responding. Disconnect the battery and wait before removing it, and keep the new clockspring centered as shipped until it is installed.

Why does my power steering whine when I turn?

A whine when turning often means low fluid, air in the system or a worn pump. Check the fluid level and look for leaks at the hoses, pump and rack. If the fluid is full and the noise continues, the pump may need to be replaced.
