An ignition lock cylinder is the keyed part of the ignition that your key turns to start the engine. We list 30 lock cylinders from $11 to $187 for vehicles from 1964-2013, from Dorman, Standard Motor Products, SKP and AC Delco, with fits for the Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Camry and Kia Optima.

How the cylinder fails

Wafers inside the cylinder wear with years of use, so the key may stick, need jiggling, or stop turning. Some cylinders seize from dirt or a broken internal part. If the key turns but nothing happens, the fault may be the ignition switch behind the cylinder instead.

Try a spare key first, since a worn key can cause the same symptoms.

Keys and contents

Most cylinders here include keys, and some include a standard brass key plus programmable keys. Others come with an instruction sheet. Mounting hardware is included with some listings and not others, so read the package contents.

If your vehicle has an immobilizer, new keys may need to be programmed before the engine will start. The listing and your owner's manual will show what is needed.

Fitting tips

Many cylinders release by turning the key to a set position and pressing a small release pin through an access hole in the column. If the old cylinder will not turn, removal can be harder and may need drilling, so check a service guide for your vehicle first.

Disconnect the battery and follow the airbag precautions before you work around the steering column. Test every key position before reinstalling the column covers.

Ignition Lock Cylinder questions

What is the difference between a lock cylinder and an ignition switch?

The lock cylinder is the keyed part you turn. The ignition switch is the electrical part behind it that powers circuits and the starter. Either part can cause a no start.

Can I replace an ignition lock cylinder without the key?

It is much harder. Most cylinders release only in a turned position. Without a working key, removal may involve drilling, which is a job for a locksmith or shop.

Do new lock cylinders come with keys?

Most listings here include keys. Some include programmable keys for vehicles with an immobilizer. Check the package contents. Keys that are not programmed may turn the lock but still not start the engine.
