Ignition Switch

An ignition switch is the electrical switch that powers your vehicle's circuits and the starter when you turn the key. We list 33 ignition switches from $15 to $139 for vehicles from 1966-2017, from AC Delco, Standard Motor Products, Beck Arnley and SKP, with fits for the Chevrolet Impala, Honda Accord and Pontiac Grand Am.

Lock cylinder versus switch

The lock cylinder is the keyed part you turn. The ignition switch sits behind or below it and does the electrical work, sending power to accessories, the ignition system and the starter as the key moves through each position.

On many older GM columns, the switch mounts lower on the column and is moved by a rod from the lock, which is why parts differ so much between vehicles.

Signs of a failing switch

A worn switch can cause a no crank condition, stalling while driving, dash lights that flicker, accessories that cut out, or a starter that keeps running after you release the key. Some owners find the vehicle starts only when the key is held at a certain angle.

Check the battery, cables and starter relay first. Then test the switch outputs with a meter in each key position.

Choosing and installing

Match the year, trim and column type in the fitment table. Some switches include bolts, a connector shield and instructions, and some include mounting hardware while others do not.

Disconnect the battery before starting, and follow airbag precautions near the steering wheel. On column mounted switches, set the switch to the correct position as described in the instructions before tightening it. Test start and every accessory position before reinstalling trim.

Ignition Switch questions

Can a bad ignition switch cause stalling?

Yes. A worn switch can briefly cut power to the ignition or fuel system while driving, which can stall the engine. Have it checked promptly.

How do I test an ignition switch?

Use a test light or meter to check for power at each output terminal as you turn the key through each position. Compare the results with the wiring diagram.

Is the ignition switch part of the lock cylinder?

On most vehicles they are separate parts. Some assemblies combine them. Check whether your vehicle needs the switch, the cylinder or both. Test the switch before ordering.
