Signs of a failing pump

A whine or groan that gets louder when you turn the wheel is the classic symptom. Stiff steering, especially at low speed, jerky assist and fluid leaks from the pump body or shaft seal are others.

Low fluid, a slipping belt or a clogged hose can cause similar noise and heavy steering. Check the fluid level and condition, and look for foamy fluid that points to an air leak, before you replace the pump.

What to check before ordering

Pumps differ in what comes in the box. Some include the reservoir, some include the pulley and some include neither. If the pulley is not included, you need a pulley removal and installation tool to move your old one over.

Also compare the hose port type, such as an O-ring fitting or an inverted flare, and the mounting points. Check the fitment table for your engine, since one model can use different pumps.

Installing a new pump

Drain or siphon the old fluid, then remove the belt, hoses and mounting bolts. Use new O-rings or seals on the fittings. If the old pump failed and shed debris, flush the lines and consider whether the steering gear also needs attention.

Fill with the correct fluid and bleed air from the system as the instructions direct. Running a new pump dry can damage it, so keep the reservoir full during bleeding.

Power Steering Pump questions

Why does my power steering whine when turning?

The most common causes are low fluid, air in the system or a worn pump. Check the fluid level first and look for leaks. If the level is correct and the noise remains, the pump may be failing.

Do I need to transfer the pulley to the new pump?

Only if your new pump does not include one. Listings here show whether the pulley is included. Pressed-on pulleys need a puller and installer tool to move them safely.

Can I use any power steering fluid?

No. Vehicles call for specific fluids, and some use automatic transmission fluid while others need a dedicated power steering fluid. Check your owner's manual or the reservoir cap.
