Steering Rack

A steering rack, or rack and pinion, turns steering wheel rotation into side to side movement of the tie rods. We carry 39 racks from $124 to $1300 by A1 Cardone, SKP, AC Delco, Detroit Axle and TRQ, with strong coverage for Dodge Dakota and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 plus Honda Accord, Ford Explorer and F150.

Signs of a failing rack

Leaking fluid from the rack boots or fittings is a common sign on hydraulic racks. Others include a clunk or knock when turning, loose or wandering steering, heavy steering in one direction and a steering wheel that is slow to return to center.

Electric racks may set a power steering warning light and lose assist. Worn tie rods, a failing pump or low fluid can also cause trouble, so diagnose before you replace.

Hydraulic or electric rack

Hydraulic racks connect to the power steering pump with pressure and return lines. Electric power steering racks use a motor on the rack and do not need fluid. Order the type your vehicle came with, and check the fitment table for trim and drive type.

Some racks include outer or inner tie rods, and package contents may list a sealing kit or mounting bushings. Input shaft length varies, so compare it with your old rack.

Installation notes

Center the steering and lock or secure the steering wheel before you disconnect the column. Turning the wheel while the column is disconnected can damage the airbag clockspring.

On hydraulic racks, flush the system and bleed it after installation. Some electric racks need a steering angle calibration with a scan tool. Get a wheel alignment before driving any distance, since toe will be off.

Steering Rack questions

Do steering racks come with tie rods?

Some do and some do not. This group includes racks with tie rod ends and others with inner tie rods only. Check the package contents and plan to move your old outer tie rods over if needed.

Why do I need to lock the steering wheel when replacing a rack?

The airbag clockspring in the column can only turn so far. If the wheel spins while the column is disconnected, the clockspring can break, which disables the airbag. Keep the wheel centered and secured.

Do I need an alignment after a rack replacement?

Yes. A new rack and tie rods change toe and steering wheel position. Get an alignment right after installation to prevent tire wear and pulling.
