Why owners convert
Air suspension rides smoothly when it works, but rubber air bags crack with age and compressors wear out from running too often. Common signs are a vehicle that sags at one corner or across an axle after sitting, a compressor that runs constantly, and a suspension warning on the dash. Replacing air springs, the compressor and valves can cost a lot. A conversion kit swaps in passive coil springs and shocks, which do not leak and need no compressor.
Front, rear or both axles
Kits are listed for the front, the rear, or front and rear together. Package contents vary: some include complete strut assemblies, while others include coil springs, spring seats, shock absorbers, bushings and hardware for each side. Read the contents line so you know exactly what is in the box. If both axles use air, converting only one can leave the other side to fail later, so think about the whole system before choosing.
Fitment and the warning light
Many vehicles with air suspension also have electronic ride control or automatic leveling, so the conversion can affect the warning light, the compressor and sometimes the ride height settings. Follow the kit instructions for disabling the compressor and dealing with any warning on the dash. Choose your year, make and model and check the fitment table for trim and drive type, since air suspension was often an option on only some trims. Support the vehicle securely on stands during the work.
Coil Spring Conversion Kit questions
Will a coil spring conversion change how my vehicle rides?
The ride is usually a little firmer than a healthy air system and it no longer self-levels under load. Many owners find it similar to a vehicle that came with standard springs from the factory.
Will the suspension warning light come on after conversion?
It can, depending on the vehicle. Some kits include parts or instructions to manage the warning, while others need a setting change. Read the kit instructions for your model before you start.
Can I convert just the rear air springs?
Yes, if your vehicle only has rear air suspension or if the kit is listed for rear use. On vehicles with air at both axles, check whether converting one axle is supported by the kit maker.
