Transmission
An automatic transmission speed sensor reports how fast the input or output shaft is turning so the computer can time shifts. We list 54 transmission speed sensors from $6 to $244 for 1990-2022 vehicles. Honda leads with the Accord and Civic, followed by the Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Elantra, plus the Nissan Maxima and Mazda 3.

The computer compares input and output shaft speeds to choose shift points and detect slipping. Many vehicles also use the output sensor for the speedometer.
Common signs include harsh or erratic shifts, a transmission stuck in one gear, a speedometer that drops to zero or jumps, cruise control that will not engage, and a check engine light with speed sensor codes. A dirty magnetic tip covered in metal particles can also give a weak signal.
Most automatic transmissions have an input sensor and an output sensor, and they are not interchangeable. Our listings name input, output, upper right and right positions. Read the code to know which one you need.
Some sensors come with a wiring harness, with lengths such as 12 in or 18.75 in, while others are sensor only. Match the connector and mounting style to the original. Brands include AC Delco, Dorman, Beck Arnley, NGK and Genuine.
Pick your vehicle and read the fitment table for transmission and engine. Compare the old sensor's part number before you order.
Most sensors are held by one bolt. Some fluid may drip when you pull the old one, so have a pan ready. Clean the bore, lightly oil the new O-ring, and install it straight. Check the fluid level afterward and top up with the correct fluid.
Yes. Many vehicles use the output speed sensor signal for the speedometer, so a failed sensor can make it read zero or jump around.
The input sensor reads the shaft coming from the engine and torque converter. The output sensor reads the shaft going to the wheels. The computer compares both.
Usually only a small amount. Have a drain pan ready and check the fluid level after installing the new sensor.
