Why change the transmission filter
Automatic transmissions shed tiny amounts of friction material and metal as clutches and gears wear. The filter traps this debris. A clogged filter restricts fluid flow, which can cause delayed engagement, slipping and overheating.
Follow the service interval in your owner's manual. Trucks used for towing or heavy loads often need more frequent service. Many shops replace the filter whenever they drop the pan to change fluid.
Filter kits and pan gaskets
Some listings are filter only. Others are kits with a pan gasket, a filter seal or O-ring. A few filters are internal and need the transmission partly disassembled, so read the details.
Filter media types include cellulose and enhanced cellulose. Match the filter to your transmission model, because the same vehicle may have been sold with different transmissions. A new pan gasket is a must if your pan uses a reusable gasket that is worn.
Service tips
Let the transmission cool before draining. Loosen the pan bolts gradually so the fluid drains from one corner. Remove the old filter and its seal, which sometimes sticks in the case.
Clean the pan and magnet, fit the new filter and gasket, and torque the pan bolts evenly. Refill with the fluid type your transmission specifies and check the level with the method in your service manual. Use the fitment table for your transmission.

How often should I change my transmission filter?
Follow your owner's manual. Severe service such as towing, hauling or stop and go traffic usually calls for shorter intervals. Check the fluid level and condition between services too.
Does the transmission filter come with a pan gasket?
Many kits include a pan gasket, and some include a seal or O-ring. Check the package contents on the listing you choose. Order one separately if your kit does not include it.
Can changing the filter fix slipping?
Sometimes, if the slip is caused by a clogged filter or low fluid. If the clutches are already worn, a filter change will not fix the slip.
