Transmission Mount

A transmission mount holds the transmission to the frame or subframe and soaks up vibration from the drivetrain. We list 32 mounts from $12 to $182 for 1964-2025 vehicles, from Anchor, Westar and DEA, with many for the Ford Explorer and others for the Mustang, Nissan Rogue and Toyota models.

Signs of a bad transmission mount

Mounts use rubber or fluid filled cushions between metal brackets. Over time the rubber cracks, separates from the metal or collapses. A fluid filled mount can leak.

Common symptoms include a clunk when shifting into drive or reverse, a thump when you accelerate or let off the gas, more vibration in the cabin and visible sagging of the transmission. A broken mount also adds stress to the engine mounts and exhaust.

Position and mount type

Rear wheel drive vehicles usually have a single rear transmission mount under the tail of the transmission. Front wheel drive vehicles often have a left side mount that acts as the transmission mount, along with other engine mounts.

Listings show the position, stud count and mounting hole count. Cushion types include solid rubber and fluid filled. Match the type your vehicle uses, because a solid mount in place of a fluid mount can increase vibration.

Replacement tips

Support the transmission with a jack and a wood block before removing the mount, and keep the vehicle on stands. Raise the transmission only enough to remove and fit the mount.

Check the engine mounts while you are there, as they often wear at the same time. Torque all bolts to spec. Use the fitment table to confirm your drive type and transmission, because 2WD and 4WD versions of the Explorer can use different mounts.

Transmission Mount questions

What does a bad transmission mount feel like?

You may feel a clunk or jolt when shifting into gear, accelerating or braking, along with more vibration through the floor and seats. The symptoms usually get worse as the mount cushion separates further.

Should I replace engine mounts with the transmission mount?

If they show cracks or sagging, yes. Mounts share the load, and a failed one can wear the others faster. Inspect all mounts with the vehicle raised and the engine supported.

Is a fluid filled mount better than a solid one?

Fluid filled mounts damp vibration better at idle and are used where the factory specified them. Replace like for like for the smoothest result. Mixing types on the same vehicle can change how the drivetrain feels.
