Explorer mount fitment

Transmission mounts on the Explorer split hard by generation. 2001-2005 and 2006-2010 models are body-on-frame SUVs with the 4.0L V6 and other engines. The 2011-2019 Explorer is a unibody crossover with the 3.5L V6, 3.5L turbo V6 or 2.3L four, and its mounts are a different design.

Within each group, engine, automatic or manual transmission and 2WD, 4WD or AWD all matter. Some listings name a position, such as left or upper. Explorer Sport and Sport Trac are separate applications. Do not mix up a transmission mount with an engine torque strut or a mount bracket, since they are sold as different parts.

Symptoms of a broken mount

When the rubber cracks or separates, the transmission moves more than it should. You may feel extra vibration at idle or hear a clunk or bang when you shift into Drive or Reverse, brake hard or accelerate quickly.

A quick check is to watch the engine and transmission while a helper shifts between Drive and Reverse with a foot on the brake. Large movement suggests a worn mount. In severe cases, the transmission can touch the body or frame. Fluid-filled mounts may also show a leak.

Replacing it the right way

Support the transmission with a jack and a block of wood before you remove the mount, so it does not hang on the other mounts. Depending on the year, the crossmember or subframe may need to come down for access. On 2012 and later models, the bolts are commonly 13mm with 15mm nuts.

A failed transmission mount often overloads the engine mounts and torque strut, so inspect them at the same time. Replace any that are cracked or collapsed. Torque the fasteners to spec with the powertrain resting in its normal position.

Explorer questions

Do 4WD and RWD Explorers use the same transmission mount?

Not always. Mounts for the Explorer are often split by drivetrain, engine and transmission type. Check the fitment table for your engine and 2WD, 4WD or AWD setup before ordering.

Is a torque strut the same as a transmission mount on an Explorer?

No. The torque strut is a separate engine mount that controls rocking, while the transmission mount supports the gearbox. Buy the part that matches the one you removed.

What does a bad transmission mount feel like on an Explorer?

Common signs are a clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse, a bang on hard acceleration or braking, and extra vibration at idle. Watching the drivetrain move while shifting helps confirm it.
