Cap or capless filler
Most 1993-2008 F150 trucks use a conventional screw-on cap, often with a tether. Fitment can still change with the tank and filler neck design, so pick your exact year. Engine, trim and bed length are not a reliable guide on their own.
2009-2014 F150 trucks generally use Ford's capless filler, with a spring-loaded flap instead of a cap. On those trucks, a gas cap is not the fix for an EVAP leak. Open your fuel door and look before you buy. Compare the seal size, tether and click design of your old cap with the listing.
Why F150 owners replace it
The rubber seal on a gas cap hardens and cracks with age. Once it stops sealing, the EVAP system sees a leak and the check engine light comes on, often with codes P0455, P0456 or P0457. A cap that no longer clicks or will not stay tight is another clear sign.
The cap is only one possible cause of those codes. A fuel smell near the filler, or a code that returns after a new cap, can come from EVAP hoses, the purge or vent valve, or the filler neck. Have the system tested if a new cap does not clear it.
Fitting it and next steps
Replacing a cap takes a minute and no tools. Remove the old cap, wipe the filler neck sealing surface clean, then thread on the new one until it clicks. The check engine light may take some driving to clear on its own.
On capless 2009-2014 trucks, dirt on the flap is a common leak source. Working the flap a few times with the Ford funnel can dislodge it. A damaged filler neck needs the neck assembly replaced. Avoid topping off the tank after the pump clicks off, since extra fuel can upset the EVAP system.

F150 questions
Does a 2010 F150 have a gas cap?
Most 2009-2014 F150 trucks use a capless fuel filler, so there is no screw-on cap to replace. If you have an EVAP code, inspect the filler flap and neck instead. Open the fuel door to confirm what your truck has.
Can a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light in my F150?
Yes. A loose or worn cap can trigger EVAP leak codes such as P0455 or P0456. Tighten it until it clicks or replace a cap with a cracked seal, then drive normally for the light to reset.
Will any F150 gas cap fit my truck?
No. Seal size, tether style and filler design vary by year, and some years have no cap at all. Choose your year in the filter and match the listing to your truck.
