Generation, body and side

Camry hood struts change with the generation. The 1994-1996 cars came as a sedan, coupe and wagon, and supports are not automatically shared across all three. The 2002-2006 and 2007-2011 sedans use different supports from the earlier cars, so do not pick one just because it says Camry. Fitment samples here include 2.4L and 2.5L LE, Base and XLE sedans and the Camry Hybrid.

Some listings note ball stud mounts on both sides, and some Hybrid and USA-built cars list steel supports by side. Compare the end fittings, overall length and mounting style with your old strut. A trunk lid support is a separate part and will not work on the hood.

Signs a hood strut is worn

Hood struts are gas-charged and lose pressure with age. A worn strut lets the hood drift down, drop when you let go, rise slowly or sit lower on one side. Seal leaks, corrosion and bent shafts are other causes.

A hood that will not stay up can fall on you while you work. Prop it with a sturdy support before you remove either strut, and do not rely on a weak strut to hold the hood while you check fluids.

Buy one or replace both

You can buy a single left or right strut, or a pair or kit such as the DIY Solutions hood lift support kit. If both struts are the same age and one has failed, replacing both gives you even support on each side.

On 1994-1996 cars, the reference procedure uses a 12mm wrench for the bolts and a 13mm wrench at the stud hardware. Prop the hood, remove one strut at a time, and fit the new one in the same direction. Check the bolts, studs and clips, and replace any that are worn or bent. Cycle the hood a few times to make sure it holds.

Camry questions

Does a Toyota Camry need one hood strut or two?

It depends on the generation. Listings here include single left and right struts as well as kits, so check whether your car has a strut on each side and replace both if they are the same age.

Will a 2004 Camry hood strut fit a 2009 Camry?

Do not assume it will. The 2002-2006 and 2007-2011 generations are listed separately. Select your year in the filter and compare the length and end fittings in the fitment table.

Can I use a trunk strut on my Camry hood?

No. Camry hood supports and trunk lid supports are separate parts with different lengths and force ratings. Choose a part listed as a hood strut for your year.
