Signs the handle has failed
The tailgate handle pulls on rods or cables that release the latches on each side. Plastic handles often crack at the pivot, and the return spring can break so the handle stays loose.
If the handle moves but the gate will not open, the fault may be a disconnected rod clip or a seized latch rather than the handle itself. Remove the inner access panel and check the rods before ordering a new handle.
Choosing the right handle
Handles come in all chrome, black, textured black and smooth black. Match the finish to your trim, or pick a different finish if you prefer. Plastic and metal options are listed.
Check whether your truck has a lock cylinder in the handle, a backup camera in the bezel or a power lock. Those versions use different handles. Some listings include the bezel or rods, while others are the handle alone.
Fitting the new handle
On most trucks the handle is held by a few bolts or nuts behind an access panel inside the tailgate. Lower the gate, remove the panel, unclip the rods and unbolt the old handle.
Take a photo of the rod clip positions before removal. When refitting, test the handle several times before closing up the panel to confirm both latches release evenly. Use the fitment table and your truck's trim to confirm the exact handle style.
Tailgate Handle questions
Why is my tailgate handle loose but the gate will not open?
The handle may be broken internally, or a rod clip may have popped off. Remove the inner access panel and check the rods and clips before replacing the handle.
Do I need a handle with a lock hole?
Only if your truck had a keyed tailgate lock. If your old handle had a lock cylinder, choose a handle with a lock opening so you can transfer the cylinder.
Will a Silverado tailgate handle fit a Sierra?
In some years the Silverado and Sierra share tailgate handles, but finishes and camera options vary. Check the fitment table for your exact model and year.
