ABS Speed Sensor

An ABS speed sensor reads how fast each wheel turns so the antilock brake system knows when a wheel is about to lock. We list 83 ABS speed sensors from $14 to $231 for 1994-2021 vehicles, with the heaviest coverage for Chevrolet models such as the Equinox, Malibu, S10 and Corvette.

What the sensor does

Each sensor sits near a toothed tone ring on the hub, axle or differential. As the ring spins, the sensor sends a signal to the ABS module. When one wheel slows much faster than the others under braking, the module pulses the brakes on that wheel. Many vehicles also use the same signal for traction control and stability control.

A failing sensor usually turns on the ABS warning light, and often the traction control light too. You may notice the ABS pulsing at low speed on a dry road, or the system shutting off entirely. A scan tool that reads ABS codes will usually point to the wheel at fault.

Choosing the right position

ABS sensors are position specific. Our listings cover front, rear, front left, front right, rear left, rear right and rear center sensors. A rear center sensor is typically mounted on the rear differential on trucks and older vehicles, so it reads the whole axle rather than one wheel.

Check whether the part includes a wiring harness. Some sensors come with a harness and connector attached, while others are the sensor alone or come with a dust shield, screws and grease. Match the connector to your original before you order.

Fitment and install tips

Use the vehicle selector and read the fitment table for drive type, since 2WD and 4WD versions of the same truck often use different front sensors. Compare the number on your old sensor when you can, and use your VIN if two listings look alike.

Support the vehicle on jack stands before removing a wheel. Clean rust and debris from the sensor bore and tone ring, since buildup can cause a weak signal even with a new sensor. Route the harness exactly as the original so it stays clear of the tire and suspension.

ABS Speed Sensor questions

Can I drive with a bad ABS speed sensor?

Your regular brakes still work, but the antilock function and often traction control will be disabled. That means wheels can lock on slick roads. Replace the sensor soon and have the code cleared.

Do I need to replace ABS sensors in pairs?

No. ABS sensors are usually replaced one at a time, only on the wheel that has failed. Read the ABS code first so you buy the right position.

Why is my ABS light on after replacing the sensor?

The code may need clearing with a scan tool, or the fault may be in the wiring, connector or tone ring. A cracked or rusty tone ring can give a bad signal even with a new sensor.
