Cooling System

Fan Blade

A fan blade bolts to the fan clutch or water pump hub on engines with a mechanical cooling fan and pulls air through the radiator. We list 40 fan blades from $22 to $122 for 1992-2015 vehicles, from Motorcraft, Dorman and others, with fits for the Ford Explorer, Expedition and Ranger, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Pickup.

When to replace a fan blade

Plastic fan blades get brittle with heat and age. Replace a blade that has cracks at the roots or tips, a missing piece, warped blades, or a hub that wobbles. Damage can come from a loose shroud, a hard object in the engine bay or a failed water pump bearing. A damaged fan can cause vibration and overheating at idle. Never run an engine with a cracked fan, because a blade can break off at speed.

Matching the old fan

Fan blades differ in diameter, number of blades, pitch and rotation direction, and some engines spin the fan the opposite way from others. Compare these details, along with the bolt pattern and pilot hole, with your old fan. Blades here are plastic in white or black. Mounting hardware is not included on the listings that say so, so reuse your bolts if they are sound. Pick your year, make and model, then confirm the engine listed in the fitment table.

Installation tips

Work with the engine off and cool, and disconnect the battery. Many fans come out together with the fan clutch, and some clutches thread onto the water pump shaft and need a special wrench set. Check the fan clutch for oil leaks and the water pump for play while you are there. Tighten the fan bolts evenly to the specified torque, and spin the fan by hand to check clearance from the shroud before starting.

Fan Blade questions

Can I drive with a cracked fan blade?

No. A cracked fan can lose a blade at speed, which can damage the radiator, hoses and anything nearby, and injure someone working under the hood. Replace it before driving.

Should I replace the fan clutch with the fan blade?

If the clutch leaks oil, spins too freely or has play, replace it at the same time. Many fan blade failures start with a worn clutch or water pump bearing that lets the fan wobble.

How do I know which direction my fan turns?

Compare the blade pitch on your old fan with the listing, and check the fitment table for your engine. Some engines with serpentine belts spin the fan in reverse, so the blade shape differs.
