Engine and blade design
Explorer fan blades follow the engine and year more than the drivetrain. 1994-1996, 1997-2001, 2002-2005 and 2006-2010 models each have their own applications. The 5.0L V8 used from 1998 is separate from the 4.0L V6, and the later 4.6L V8 is separate again.
Count the blades and measure the diameter on your old fan. Some listings call out a 10-blade V6 fan, for example. Check the hub bolt pattern and rotation too. The Explorer Sport and Sport Trac can use different cooling parts. Make sure your Explorer has a belt-driven clutch fan, not an electric fan assembly, before you order.
When a fan blade needs replacing
Explorer owners usually replace the blade after it cracks, warps or loses a tip, or when it starts to wobble. You may hear rattling or scraping as it touches the shroud, or feel vibration from the front of the engine. A damaged fan moves less air, so the temperature can climb in traffic or at idle.
Overheating at low speed is not always the blade. A worn fan clutch, a leaking water pump, a missing shroud, a clogged radiator or a sticking thermostat can cause it too. Inspect each one.
Blade only or with clutch
Some listings are the blade only, and some note that mounting hardware is not included. If the fan clutch is weak, leaking or wobbles on its shaft, replace it at the same time. A worn clutch or water pump bearing can make a new blade shake and fail early.
Work only with the engine off and cool. Check that the blade faces the correct direction and seats flat on the clutch hub before you tighten the bolts. Use the torque spec from Ford service information for your year. Then confirm clearance to the shroud and radiator by turning the fan by hand.

Explorer questions
Do 4.0L V6 and 5.0L V8 Explorers use the same fan blade?
No. The 5.0L V8 uses a separate fan application from the 4.0L V6. Choose your engine in the fitment table and compare blade count and diameter with your old fan.
Does the fan blade come with a fan clutch?
Most listings here are the blade only, and some exclude mounting hardware. If your fan clutch is worn or leaking, buy it separately and replace both together.
Can a cracked fan blade cause my Explorer to overheat?
Yes. A damaged or missing blade moves less air across the radiator, especially at idle. A worn fan clutch or water pump can cause the same symptom, so check those too.
