Camaro spark plug fitment

The plug follows the engine, not the body style, so a coupe and convertible with the same engine use the same plug. The 1989-1992 Camaro offered V6 and V8 engines such as the 5.0L LB9. The 1993-2002 Camaro used the 3.4L and 3.8L V6 and the 5.7L LT1 and LS1, with separate GM fitment for the 1998-2002 SS. There were no 2003-2009 Camaros.

The 2010-2015 Camaro used the 3.6L V6 and 6.2L V8, and listings note engine codes such as the SS 6.2L L99. The 2015 SS has its own iridium plug. Match the thread reach, seat type, heat range and gap for your engine, not just the year.

Signs your Camaro plugs are worn

As plugs wear, the electrode erodes and the gap grows, or deposits foul the tip. You may notice hard starting, a rough idle, misfire, hesitation, slower acceleration and worse fuel economy. A steady or flashing check engine light can follow.

The same symptoms come from worn plug wires, a bad coil, a leaking injector or a vacuum leak. On older Camaros, check the plug wires and boots whenever you pull the plugs. On LS-family engines and the later 3.6L and 6.2L, read the codes and test the ignition and fuel side before blaming the plugs.

Buying and installing Camaro plugs

Buy a full set for routine service, one plug per cylinder, so six for a V6 and eight for a V8. A single plug only makes sense for replacing one damaged plug. Check the gap against the spec for your engine. GM lists different gaps for different plugs, such as 0.040 inch for one conventional plug and 0.045 inch for one double platinum plug. Some iridium plugs are pre-gapped and should not be bent.

Work on a cold engine. Twist the boot as you pull, never the wire, and blow debris out of the well before you remove the plug. Start new plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque them to spec.

Camaro questions

How many spark plugs does a Camaro need?

One per cylinder. A V6 Camaro takes six and a V8 Camaro takes eight. Buy a complete set for routine service, and check the fitment table for your engine.

What is the spark plug gap for my Camaro?

It depends on the engine and the plug. GM lists different gaps for different plugs, such as 0.040 inch and 0.045 inch. Check the spec for your engine, and do not bend pre-gapped iridium plugs.

Does the 2015 Camaro SS use a special spark plug?

Yes. GM lists a specific iridium plug for the 2015 Camaro SS, separate from other years and engines. Select your trim and engine in the fitment table.
