Next, find the pulley's spot on the belt routing diagram. Listings here name positions such as main drive, left, smooth and air conditioning. On 2018 diesel trucks, GM lists different upper idlers for single and dual alternator setups. For 2007, confirm Classic or new body. Signs of a bad idler pulley
A worn idler bearing is the usual problem, and GM describes the repair as a noisy idler pulley bearing. Listen for chirping, squealing, grinding, rumbling or rattling from the belt area. With the belt off, a failing pulley may wobble, feel rough or spin with a gritty sound.
A bad pulley can chew the belt edges, make the belt wander or throw it, and a seized one can overheat. Once the belt comes off, the alternator, A/C and other driven parts stop working. The tensioner, alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump and the belt can make similar noises, so pin down the source first.
Pulley, tensioner or drive kit
A fixed idler pulley and a tensioner pulley are different parts, so match the description to what failed. Some later trucks use an idler with its own bracket.
