2500 HD brake fitment

Brake parts change by generation: 2001-2006, 2007-2010, 2011-2014, 2015-2019 and 2020-2021. In 2007, both a carryover Classic and the new body were sold, so confirm which you have. The 2020-2021 trucks use substantially different parts from earlier years.

On these trucks, GVWR, axle and brake package matter more than cab or bed. Early 2001 trucks show different front rotor diameters by GVWR and different rear rotor dimensions. Drive type can also change the part. Do not use 3500 HD parts without checking, especially dual rear wheel rear rotors. Measure diameter, thickness, height and center bore, and use your VIN.

Signs your HD truck needs brakes

Thin pads, a low pad warning, grinding and weaker stopping are the usual signs. Pulsation in the pedal or steering wheel points to rotor problems. A pull to one side, uneven inner and outer pad wear, a burning smell or one hot wheel points to a sticking caliper or seized slide pins.

Mud, dust and road salt speed up wear, and GM has called out harsh environments as a cause of early brake wear and noise on 2020-2021 HD trucks. A soft pedal or fluid loss calls for a look at the hydraulics. On 2015 trucks, a rear brake line rubbing on the axle housing has been documented, so check it.

Pads, rotors and full kits

Pad sets cover one axle, and rotors are often sold singly. Complete kits, such as the Power Stop front and rear pad and rotor kits or the DuraGo kits listed here, give you matched parts for an axle. On 2020-2021 trucks, GM specifies certain semi-metallic linings be paired with matching rotors, so follow that combination if you use it.

Support the truck on jack stands. Service the caliper slide hardware, clean the hub and mounting faces, and inspect the flexible hoses and steel lines while the wheels are off. Piston reset and parking brake steps vary by generation. Bleed the brakes if you open the hydraulics, and pump the pedal firm before driving.

Silverado 2500 HD questions

Do Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD trucks use the same brakes?

Not automatically. Parts differ by GVWR and axle, and dual rear wheel 3500 HD trucks use different rear rotors. Check the fitment table for your 2500 HD.

Do 2019 and 2020 Silverado 2500 HD brakes interchange?

No. The 2020-2021 trucks use substantially different brake parts from 2019 and earlier. Select your exact model year in the fitment table. Earlier parts should not be used on the newer trucks.

Why do my 2020 Silverado 2500 HD brakes wear fast?

GM has noted early wear and noise on 2020-2021 HD trucks used in muddy, dusty or corrosive conditions. Its fix pairs a specified semi-metallic pad with a matching rotor.
