Duramax code decides fitment
Only the 6.6L Duramax diesel uses glow plugs. The 6.0L and 8.1L gas engines do not. Within the diesel range, the engine code matters more than the body, cab, bed or 2WD and 4WD. Fitment samples here cover the LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, LGH and the L5P.
The 2003 trucks used the LB7, and the LLY took over during the 2004 model year. The 2007 trucks were split between the LBZ and the LMM. The 2017 trucks got the L5P, which needs its own catalog match. Read the engine code from your VIN or the RPO label, and compare the terminal and plug dimensions with the one you remove.
Cold start symptoms
Glow plugs help a cold diesel fire. When one or more fail, you may notice long cranking or hard starts when cold, rough running right after startup, white or gray smoke on a cold start, and a glow plug fault code. One bad plug often shows up most in cold weather.
The glow plug control module is a separate part, and a module or wiring fault can look like failed plugs, sometimes setting codes for several cylinders. A weak battery, fuel delivery or injector problem can also cause hard starts, so test before you buy.
One plug or all eight
The Duramax V8 uses eight glow plugs, four per bank. Listings may sell one plug or a full set, so check the quantity. Test each plug before you order, because sometimes only one has failed.
Check the resistance of each new plug before you install it. An open circuit means a broken tip, and the plug should not go in. Keep the plug straight in its bore. Some ceramic plug procedures call for a bore reamer, so check whether that applies to your engine. Inspect the harness and connectors, and torque to the spec for your engine.
