Generation, side and features

F150 door mirrors are mostly tied to one generation: 1996, 1997-2003, 2004-2008, 2009-2014 or 2015-2020. A 1996 mirror is not a 1997 mirror, and the 2004 redesign changed the door hardware. Cab style matters more than engine, bed length or 4WD.

Then match the features. Decide between a standard mirror and a tow mirror, manual or power adjustment, and heated or plain glass. Check for a turn signal, puddle lamp, power folding, blind spot alert or auto dimming. Several listings exclude the Heritage model, and one notes it lacks the dimming function of the original. Count the wires in your old connector and compare.

Why F150 owners replace mirrors

Most mirrors get replaced after a parking lot hit, a tight trail or a brush with a gate while towing. A cracked housing, broken glass or snapped mounting tabs usually means a full assembly. A loose or vibrating mirror often points to a worn pivot or damaged mount.

On power mirrors, the glass may stop moving, or only move in one direction, from a motor, switch or wiring fault. Heated glass that will not clear frost, or a signal lamp that has gone dark, are other common reasons. Confirm your truck came with those features before blaming the mirror.

Fitting a new door mirror

Most F150 mirrors are sold one side at a time, so order left, right or both. A glass-only part is not a full mirror, and tow mirror glass often fits only the upper or lower section.

On 2017 and later trucks, you lower the window, pop off the triangle trim panel inside the door, unplug the harness, and remove two nuts and two bolts while someone holds the mirror outside. Test every function before you refit the trim. Do not overtighten the nuts, since the plastic housing can crack. Replace any clips that no longer hold.

F150 questions

Will a standard F150 mirror replace a tow mirror?

Physically it may bolt on, but standard and tow mirrors are different assemblies with different glass and often different wiring. Match the type your truck has now, or confirm the connector and features before switching styles.

How do I know if my F150 mirror has a turn signal or heat?

Look for a signal lamp in the housing and a heated glass symbol on the mirror face. Counting the wires in the connector also helps. Pick a listing with the same features so nothing stops working.

Is the F150 driver side mirror the same as the passenger side?

No. Each side is a separate part with its own mounting and glass. Choose left or driver side, or right or passenger side, in the listing. Order both if both are damaged.
