F250 alternator by engine and setup

On the Super Duty, cab, bed, drive type and trim do not usually decide the alternator. The engine and the electrical setup do. Gas and diesel units are not interchangeable, and the 7.3L and 6.0L Power Stroke use different alternators. The 6.4L arrived for 2008 and needs its own check.

Some trucks have two alternators, and Ford lists separate units for each position, so the upper unit is not the same as the single-system unit. Listings here note details such as 6.0L single alternator systems, with some built from 09/14/2004. Compare amperage, connector, pulley rib count and mounting with the label on your old alternator.

Signs of a failing F250 alternator

A failing alternator usually turns on the battery or charging light. You may see low or jumping voltage, dim or flickering lights, slow cranking, batteries that keep going flat and accessories that cut out. A whine or a rough-sounding pulley can point to worn bearings.

Diesel trucks and trucks that tow, plow or run extra lights put a heavy load on the charging system, which can expose a weak alternator. Before you buy, check the belt, tensioner, battery terminals and the main charging cable and fusible link, since problems there look like alternator failure.

Replacing the alternator

Decide between a new and a remanufactured unit, and check whether a pulley comes with it. Match the rated output to your truck, especially on heavy-duty electrical packages. On dual alternator trucks, make sure you buy the unit for the position that failed.

Disconnect the negative cables before you start. Diesel Super Duty trucks can have two batteries. Release the belt, unplug the connector and output cable, then unbolt the unit. Inspect the belt, tensioner and pulley alignment, and replace anything worn or heat-damaged. After installation, check charging voltage and confirm the warning light goes out.

F250 Super Duty questions

Does my F250 Super Duty have one or two alternators?

Some diesel Super Duty trucks have a dual alternator setup, and listings here separate single systems from upper units. Look under the hood or check the fitment table for your engine and build date.

Do the 7.3L and 6.0L Power Stroke use the same alternator?

No. The 7.3L and 6.0L diesels use different alternators, and gas and diesel units do not interchange either. Choose by engine in the fitment table.

How many batteries do I disconnect on a diesel F250?

Diesel Super Duty trucks can have two batteries. Disconnect the negative cable on each battery before you remove the alternator. Reconnect both when the job is done and check charging voltage.
