Transmission and body matter

Civic ignition locks are cataloged by body style and transmission, not just year. The 1996-2000 cars came as a coupe, hatchback and sedan, and Honda lists separate locks for automatic and manual versions. The 2001-2005 cars are mostly coupe and sedan, with their own trim and transmission splits. The 2006-2011 cars add Hybrid, Si and GX branches, and Honda lists separate lock kits for manual cars.

Fitment samples here include DX coupe and sedan automatics, manual cars, the LX-S and the Hybrid. Decide whether you need the lock cylinder, the complete lock housing, the electrical ignition switch or a kit, because those are different parts.

Signs the lock is wearing out

Worn tumblers make the key stick, refuse to turn or fail to reach START. The cylinder may turn without engaging the switch, or the steering column lock may break.

A worn key can feel the same as a worn cylinder, so try a good spare key first. If the key turns but the car will not crank, starts only some of the time or loses accessory power, the electrical ignition switch may be the fault rather than the lock itself.

Before you install it

Check whether the listing includes keys, the electrical switch, wiring or mounting hardware. On cars with Honda's immobilizer, a new cylinder and key may need programming by a dealer or qualified locksmith before the engine will start.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least three minutes before working near the steering column. Factory lock housings may use shear-head bolts. Removing them can mean center-punching, drilling with a 3/16 inch bit and using a screw extractor. New shear bolts are tightened until their heads snap off. If only the electrical switch is being replaced, the cylinder can usually stay in place.

Civic questions

Do automatic and manual Civics use the same ignition lock?

Not always. Honda lists separate ignition locks for automatic and manual Civics in several years, and by body style in some. Check the transmission in the fitment table before ordering.

Will my Civic start with a new ignition lock and key?

On cars with Honda's immobilizer, the new key may need programming by a dealer or qualified locksmith before the engine will start. Plan for that before you install.

How do I remove the shear bolts on a Civic ignition lock?

Center-punch each bolt head, drill it with a 3/16 inch bit and remove it with a screw extractor. Install new shear bolts and tighten them until the heads break off.
