YJ, TJ or JK guards
Tail light guards follow the body generation and lamp shape. The 1990-1995 Wranglers in this range are YJ models with rectangular lamps. The 1997-2006 TJ uses a different lamp, and the longer 2004-2006 Unlimited shares the general lamp location, but check the guard maker's application. The 2007-2017 JK, in two-door and four-door Unlimited form, needs its own JK guards.
Drivetrain, engine, trim and suspension do not matter. Lamp design does. Some JK guards come in flat and wrap styles, and some YJ and TJ guards will not fit European-style lamps. Body Armor's JK guards are among the options here.
Why Jeep owners add guards
Wrangler tail lamps sit out in the open at the rear corners, where rocks, brush, trail obstacles and loose cargo can break them. Guards shield the lens and housing from those hits.
Owners also replace guards that are bent, cracked, rusted, loose or missing, or that rattle or press on the lens. A guard does not fix lighting faults. If a lamp is out, check the bulb, socket, connector and fuse as a separate repair.
Fitting tail light guards
Most guards here are sold as a pair. Many YJ and TJ kits bolt on with included hardware and no drilling, but mounting methods vary, so read each listing.
Test-fit each guard around the lamp before tightening. Make sure it does not touch the lens, mounting screws or wiring, then tighten the hardware evenly so it does not rattle. If you are replacing a damaged lamp at the same time, inspect the housing, gasket, socket and connector for corrosion before you mount the guard over it.
