Climate Control

Blower Motor Resistor

A blower motor resistor controls fan speed by changing how much current reaches the blower motor. Our catalogue lists 145 blower motor resistors from $7 to $311 for 1979-2019 vehicles. Chevrolet and Ford lead, with many options for the F250 Super Duty, Tahoe, Malibu, Corvette, F150 and Mustang.

How it fails

On manual systems, the resistor has several coils that drop voltage for each low speed. On automatic systems, it is often an electronic module that varies speed smoothly.

The classic sign is a fan that works only on high, or that skips one or more speeds. A fan that will not shut off can also point to a failed electronic module. Resistors usually sit in the airflow near the blower motor to stay cool, and a seized or worn blower motor drawing extra current is a common reason they burn out.

Front, rear and harness

Vehicles with rear climate control often have a separate rear resistor. Our listings name front and rear positions.

The connector often melts when the resistor fails. Some listings include a wiring harness or pigtail, along with mounting brackets or a gasket, which lets you replace the damaged plug at the same time. Compare the terminal count and mounting holes with your old part. Brands include Dorman, Standard Motor Products, Motorcraft, AC Delco, API and Forecast.

Fitment and install

Read the fitment table for manual or automatic climate control, since they use different resistors. Match the part number on your old unit when you can.

Disconnect the battery first. Remove the screws, pull the resistor out of the duct, and unplug it. Check the connector for melted plastic or brown pins. If the blower motor is noisy or slow, consider replacing it too, or the new resistor may fail early.

Blower Motor Resistor questions

Why does my blower motor resistor keep failing?

A worn blower motor that draws too much current is the usual cause. A corroded or melted connector can also overheat the new part.

Where is the blower motor resistor located?

Most sit in the HVAC duct near the blower motor, often behind the glove box or under the passenger side dash.

Can I drive with a bad blower motor resistor?

Yes, the vehicle will drive normally, but you may have limited fan speeds. That can make defrosting the windshield harder in cold or wet weather.
