Front, rear and body style

The 2003-2006 Expedition and the 2007-2017 Expedition use different bodies, and the extended EL arrived for 2007 alongside the standard length. Fitment is not tied to engine, trim or 2WD and 4WD.

The big split is front versus rear HVAC. The front resistor sits near the passenger-side blower housing, and the rear resistor for the auxiliary system sits in the rear passenger-side quarter panel area. They are not interchangeable. Some later trucks use a blower motor regulator or control module rather than a simple resistor. Match the connector, terminal count, mounting and shape of the part you remove.

Blower only works on high

The classic sign is a front blower that runs only on high, because high speed bypasses the resistor. You may also lose one or two lower speeds, get erratic speeds, or lose the blower entirely.

Heat, age and a dragging blower motor wear out resistors. Look at the plug when you pull the part. A melted connector or browned terminals mean the wiring needs attention too. The fuse, relay, HVAC controls and the motor can also cause blower trouble, so test before you buy.

Resistor alone or with pigtail

If the connector is clean, a resistor alone will do. If it is melted or brown, use a kit with a new pigtail, such as the Dorman HVAC blower motor resistor kits listed here.

The front resistor is reached from the passenger side, under or behind the glove box, and a lower trim or kick panel may need to come off. Small screws, often removed with an 8mm socket, hold it in place. Check the blower motor for noise or drag, because a failing motor can burn out a new resistor. Test every fan speed when you are done.

Expedition questions

Why does my Expedition blower only work on high?

High speed bypasses the resistor, so a burned resistor usually takes out the lower speeds first. Check the connector too, since melted plugs often go with a failed resistor.

Where is the rear blower motor resistor on an Expedition?

On trucks with rear climate control, it is part of the rear HVAC unit in the rear passenger-side quarter panel area. It is a different part from the front resistor.

Do I need a pigtail with my Expedition blower resistor?

Only if the old connector is melted, brown or loose. A damaged plug can overheat the new resistor, so a resistor and pigtail kit is the safer choice then.
