Malibu mount fitment by engine

The 1983 Malibu was a rear-wheel-drive sedan and wagon with V6 and V8 engines, and its mounts have nothing in common with later cars. From 1997 on, the Malibu is a front-wheel-drive sedan, and each generation changed engines and mount layouts. Within a generation, a mount for one engine should not be assumed to fit another.

Position is part of the fitment. Listings here name the front, right, front right or rear left mount, and some note an automatic transmission. Confirm year, engine, transmission and VIN, then compare the bracket shape, stud layout and any fluid-filled design with your original. Some later mounts are hydraulic, and some carry an electrical connector.

Signs of a failed engine mount

Worn mounts let the engine move more than it should. You may feel extra vibration in the cabin or through the steering wheel, hear a clunk or thump when you shift into Drive or Reverse, or notice the engine rocking when you accelerate, let off the gas or drive over bumps.

Look for cracked or separated rubber, and for fluid leaking from a hydraulic mount. Age, constant vibration and collision damage all wear mounts out. A misfire, exhaust contact, a bad transmission mount or a suspension problem can feel similar, so confirm the mount is actually damaged before you order.

Single mount or full kit

A single mount fixes one failed position. A kit, such as the DIY Solutions and TRQ engine and transmission mount kits listed here, replaces several mounts at once. If one mount has collapsed, the others have often carried extra load, so inspect them all and replace any that are cracked or separated.

The engine must be supported before you unbolt a mount, because the mounts hold it in place. Use a proper engine support fixture or a jack with a wood block under a solid point. Tighten all fasteners to the factory torque for your car, and check that the engine sits in its normal position before the final tightening.

Malibu questions

How do I know which Malibu engine mount has failed?

Look for cracked or separated rubber and leaking fluid, and watch the engine as a helper shifts between Drive and Reverse with the brakes held. Listings name each position, such as front right or rear left, so match the one that failed.

Do all 2016-2018 Malibu engines use the same mounts?

No. Mount fitment depends on the engine and transmission, and GM lists distinct mount applications for these years. Check your engine, such as the 1.5L, in the fitment table before you order.

Should I replace all the engine mounts on my Malibu at once?

Not always, but inspect them all. When one mount fails, the others carry extra load and may be worn too. Kits that include engine and transmission mounts are a good option when several are damaged.
