Engine decides the Malibu plug
The Malibu nameplate covers several eras. 1979-1983 cars are rear-wheel drive with six-cylinder and V8 engines. The Malibu returned in 1997 as a front-wheel-drive sedan, with later generations starting in 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2016. In 2016, the older Malibu Limited was sold alongside the new car.
Trim names like LS, LT or Premier do not pick the plug. The engine does. Listings here name engines such as the 1.5L LFV turbo, 2.4L and 3.1L V6 with VIN codes. Match thread size, reach, heat range and terminal style for your exact engine. Four-cylinder engines take four plugs and V6 engines take six.
When Malibu plugs need changing
Most owners change plugs as scheduled maintenance, and the interval depends on your engine and plug type, so check your owner manual. Worn plugs can cause hard starts, rough idle, hesitation, a misfire under load, weaker acceleration and lower fuel economy.
A flashing check engine light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Look at the old plugs as they come out. Oil, coolant or heavy deposits on a plug point to another problem, such as a leaking seal or a bad coil, that new plugs will not fix.
Fitting new plugs properly
Buy enough for every cylinder and replace them as a full set. Check the gap on each plug, since shipping can knock it out of spec. On the turbocharged 1.5L, use exactly the plug type and gap specified for that engine.
Blow dirt away from each plug well before removal so nothing falls into the cylinder. Thread each new plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten to the torque spec for your engine. Inspect the coils and boots while you are there, and replace any that are cracked or oil soaked.

Four-cylinder Malibus such as the 1.5L, 2.4L and 2.5L take four plugs. V6 engines such as the 3.1L, 3.5L and 3.8L take six. Confirm your engine in the fitment table.
Do 2016 Malibu and Malibu Limited use the same spark plugs?
No. The 2016 Malibu Limited kept the older 2.5L engine, while the new 2016 Malibu uses different engines. Check which model and engine you have before ordering.
Do I need to gap new spark plugs for my Malibu?
Check the gap on every plug before installing, even if it says pre-gapped. Shipping can shift the electrode. Set it to the spec for your engine, especially on the 1.5L turbo.
