S10 idler pulley fitment is driven by the engine, belt routing, pulley size and tensioner design, not by cab, bed, trim or 2WD and 4WD. Fitment samples here include the 2.2L four-cylinder, including flex fuel, and the 4.3L V6. The 1989-1993 and 1994-2004 trucks have their own layouts, and 2004 coverage should be checked carefully because many catalogs stop at 2003.
Pulleys come smooth or grooved, and diameters vary by application. Match the belt contact surface and rib count, outside diameter, width, bore and offset to your old pulley. A fixed idler pulley and a tensioner pulley are different parts.
An idler pulley spins on a sealed bearing. When the bearing wears, you may hear chirping, squealing, grinding, humming or rumbling from the front of the engine. The pulley may wobble, feel rough when spun by hand, or pull the belt out of line.
If it seizes or breaks, it can shred or throw the serpentine belt and take out belt-driven parts such as the alternator, power steering pump or water pump. The tensioner, alternator, pumps and the belt itself can also make noise, so confirm which pulley it is before you buy.
If only the idler is bad, a single pulley is enough. If the belt and tensioner are worn too, a serpentine belt drive component kit from Gates, Dayco or AC Delco covers more of the system at once.
Release the belt tension, remove the belt, unbolt the old pulley and fit the new one. Route the belt by the diagram for your engine, then check alignment and tension. While the belt is off, spin every pulley by hand and replace any that are rough, loose or noisy. Replace the belt too if it is cracked or glazed.

Not necessarily. Belt routing and pulley design depend on the engine. Pick your engine in the fitment table and match the pulley surface and diameter to your old part.
With the belt off, spin the pulley by hand. Roughness, grinding, wobble or play points to a worn bearing. A chirp or squeal from the front of the engine is another sign.
Match what is on your engine now. A smooth pulley runs on the back of the belt and a grooved one on the ribbed side. Listings here are marked smooth or grooved.
