Which Tahoe pulley you need

Tahoe idler pulleys follow the engine and belt layout. 1996-1999 Tahoes mostly run the 5.7L V8. 2000-2006 and 2007-2014 trucks use the 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L V8, and pulley design can change between them. Drivetrain and trim do not decide the pulley.

Many Tahoes have more than one idler, and listings name the position, such as main drive, serpentine or air conditioning. Some pulleys are smooth and others are grooved. Measure or compare the diameter, width, groove type and bolt setup with the pulley you remove. Hybrid models use a different accessory drive, so do not assume parts cross over.

Noisy or wobbling pulleys

A failing idler usually chirps, squeals or grinds from the front of the engine, often loudest on a cold start. The sealed bearing inside wears out, dries up or picks up dirt. You may see the pulley wobble or the belt flutter at idle.

To check, release belt tension and spin each pulley by hand. Roughness, grinding, side play or a pulley that will not spin freely means it is done. A bad pulley can also let the belt walk off or wear early, so inspect the belt and tensioner at the same time.

Single pulley or drive kit

A single pulley is fine when the belt and tensioner are in good shape. If they are worn too, a drive kit saves a second job. Gates, Dayco and AC Delco list serpentine and air conditioning belt drive kits for the Tahoe that bundle a belt with pulleys or a tensioner.

Photograph or sketch the belt routing before you start, or use the label under the hood. Release tension with a belt tool or breaker bar, remove the pulley bolt and fit the new one. Torque it to spec, route the belt, then run the engine briefly and watch that the belt tracks straight.

Tahoe questions

How many idler pulleys does a Tahoe have?

It varies by year and engine. Many Tahoes have separate idlers on the main drive and the air conditioning belt. Listings name the position, so match it to the pulley you are replacing.

How do I know if my Tahoe idler pulley is bad?

Release the belt tension and spin the pulley by hand. Grinding, rough rotation, wobble or side play means the bearing is worn. A chirp or squeal from the belt area at cold start is a common early sign.

Should I replace the belt with my Tahoe idler pulley?

If the belt is cracked, glazed or frayed, yes. Worn belts can damage new pulleys and cause noise. A belt drive kit replaces the belt with matched pulleys in one order.
