Generation, drivetrain and ride system

The Tahoe uses struts at the front only. The rear uses shock absorbers. Front struts split into 2007-2014 and 2015-2019 groups, and they do not swap between them. Within each group, 2WD and 4WD trucks may use different struts.

The suspension system matters most. Tahoes with Z55 Autoride or Z95 Magnetic Ride Control use electronic dampers. A passive strut on those trucks can set a Service Suspension warning unless you use a proper conversion. Check the RPO label in the glove box for Z55 or Z95. Some assemblies are side specific, so confirm left, right or a pair.

Signs of worn Tahoe struts

A Tahoe with tired struts feels floaty and bouncy, keeps moving after dips and leans more in turns. You may hear clunks or knocks from worn upper mounts when you drive over bumps. Oil on the strut body is a sure sign it has failed.

Cupped front tires often follow. Keep in mind that worn sway bar links, ball joints, control arm bushings and poor alignment can cause similar noises and handling, so check those before you replace the struts.

Loaded assemblies and alignment

A loaded assembly comes with the spring, mount, bearing and boot already fitted. That skips the spring compressor work, which needs a proper tool because the coil is under heavy load. A bare strut is cheaper but requires moving your old spring over. Replace both fronts together for even handling.

With the SUV on jack stands, remove the wheel and disconnect the sway bar link if needed. Separate the strut from the knuckle and remove the upper tower nuts. Check bump stops and isolators while it is apart. Get a wheel alignment once the new struts are in.

Tahoe questions

Does the Chevy Tahoe have rear struts?

No. The Tahoe uses front struts and rear shock absorbers. Listings here marked front and rear are full suspension sets that include rear shocks. For rear parts only, see the Tahoe shock absorber page.

Can I use regular struts on a Tahoe with Magnetic Ride or Autoride?

Not without a proper conversion. Passive struts on a Z55 or Z95 Tahoe can trigger a Service Suspension warning. Buy a matching electronic strut, or a conversion made for your year.

Do I need an alignment after replacing Tahoe struts?

Yes. Removing the strut from the steering knuckle can change alignment angles. A professional alignment after the job keeps the Tahoe tracking straight and protects your tires.
