Suspension type comes first

Tahoe shocks change with the generation: 1999-2006, 2007-2014 and 2015-2020. Front and rear units are separate parts, and 2WD and 4WD can differ in some years. Trim and engine appear in the fitment notes, such as LT, Z71, PPV or Premier with the 5.3L or 6.2L V8, but the suspension package matters more.

Many Tahoes have Z55 Autoride, a self-leveling rear system, or Magnetic Ride Control. These use electronic or air shocks with their own part numbers, often with a wiring connector. A standard shock is not a direct swap. Check the RPO sticker in the glove box for the suspension code, and look for a plug on your old shock.

Signs your Tahoe needs shocks

A worn Tahoe shock lets the body keep bouncing after bumps, lean more in turns and nose dive under braking. You may hear clunks from worn mounts or bushings, see oil on the shock body, or notice cupped tire wear.

On Tahoes with Autoride or self-leveling rear suspension, a failing shock can cause a rear end that sits too low, a suspension warning message, or loss of load leveling when you tow. Those systems include other parts too, so check for wiring or compressor faults before you order.

Pairs, conversions and install

Replace shocks in axle pairs for even damping. Several listings are front and rear sets, and Monroe and Arnott offer air suspension shocks for leveling systems. If you choose to convert an electronic system to standard shocks, confirm the kit is made for your Tahoe and system.

Support the SUV on jack stands. At the front, you may need to support the lower control arm, and on torsion bar models you hold the shock stem while removing the top nut. Keep the bolt direction as it was. Electronic and air leveling systems may need a scan tool procedure after installation.

Tahoe questions

How do I know if my Tahoe has Autoride?

Check the RPO code sticker in the glove box for Z55, or look for an electrical connector on the top of each shock. Autoride shocks are electronically controlled and need a matching replacement or a proper conversion kit.

Can I put standard shocks on a Tahoe with self-leveling suspension?

Not as a direct swap. Self-leveling and electronic shocks use different designs and connectors. Choose a matching air or electronic shock, or a conversion kit made for your Tahoe year and system.

Do Tahoe front and rear shocks interchange?

No. Front and rear Tahoe shocks are different parts with different lengths and mounts. Choose the position you need in the listing, and buy in axle pairs.
