Check your Escape filler first

Before ordering, look at your filler neck. Many Escapes use a threaded neck with a screw-on cap, and on 2001-2006 models one Ford cap covered 2WD and 4WD trucks with every engine. Repair information describes a capless filler on 2008-2012 Escapes, yet caps are also cataloged for some of these years, so check what your vehicle actually has.

The 2013 Escape is a new design, so do not assume an older cap fits it. Listings here note gas or flex fuel and engines such as the 2.3L, 2.5L and 3.0L V6. A conventional cap has no electrical connector, so a listing with one is a different part.

Signs your Escape gas cap is bad

A cap that is loose, cracked or no longer seals lets fuel vapor escape. The usual result is a check engine light, often with an EVAP leak code such as P0455, P0456 or P0457, and sometimes a fuel smell near the filler.

Look at the rubber gasket. If it is cracked, hard or flattened, the cap cannot seal. Damaged threads, a broken tether or a cap that no longer clicks when you tighten it are other reasons to replace it. A gas cap is a cheap first check for an EVAP code, but it is not the only cause.

Fitting a new Escape fuel cap

Before you install the new cap, check the sealing surface of the filler neck for dirt, rust or pitting. A damaged neck can keep leaking even with a new cap. Seat the cap squarely and turn it until it clicks. Never use tools to tighten it.

The light may not go off right away. If the code returns after a new cap, inspect the rest of the EVAP system. On 2008-2012 Escapes with the 2.5L, code P1450 is described as a vacuum relief problem, not a loose cap. On capless models, clean and inspect the filler door seal instead of buying a cap.

Escape questions

Does every Ford Escape have a gas cap?

No. Repair information describes a capless filler on 2008-2012 Escapes, though caps are cataloged for some later years too. Look at your filler neck before you order. A capless filler needs no cap.

Can a bad gas cap turn on the check engine light in an Escape?

Yes. A loose or worn cap can set EVAP leak codes such as P0455, P0456 or P0457. If the code returns after a new cap, check the rest of the EVAP system.

Do flex fuel Escapes use a different gas cap?

Some listings here note gas or flex fuel models, so check that detail in the fitment table. Your year and filler design matter most. Look at your filler neck to confirm it takes a threaded cap.
