Engine decides Equinox fitment
The 2005-2009 Equinox runs the 3.4L V6. The 2010-2017 Equinox uses the 2.4L four, with 3.0L and 3.6L V6 engines in some years and trims. A compressor for the 2.4L does not fit a V6, and GM lists separate compressors for the 2.4L and 3.6L in 2015-2017.
FWD or AWD does not usually change the part, and trim matters only because it can point to a different engine. Listings here name VIN codes such as LAF, LEA, LFW, LF1 and LFX, so check yours. Compare mounting points, port locations, clutch and connector with your old compressor. The redesigned 2018 Equinox is a separate application.
Warm air and compressor noise
A failing Equinox compressor can blow warm or only mildly cool air, cool on and off, or make clicking, squealing or grinding noises when the AC runs. The clutch may stop engaging altogether.
That clutch symptom is not proof the compressor failed. A refrigerant leak, a bad pressure switch, a fuse or relay or a failed clutch coil can stop it too. A new compressor will not fix a leaking hose, condenser or evaporator, so have the system pressure and leaks checked first.
Kits and AC system service
Some listings are a compressor alone and others are kits. The Four Seasons, GPD and UAC kits add parts like the drier or accumulator, metering device and seals. After an internal failure, those parts and a flush help protect the new compressor from debris.
Refrigerant must be recovered with proper equipment before any line is opened. Remove the serpentine belt, lines, connector and mounting bolts. Use new O-rings and the specified refrigerant oil. Check that the compressor sits flush and the belt lines up. The system then needs evacuation, a leak check and a recharge to spec.
