Equinox strut fitment by generation
The Equinox uses struts at the front and separate shock absorbers at the rear in all three generations covered here, so a rear repair calls for rear shocks. The 2005-2009, 2010-2017 and 2018-2021 models each take their own front struts, and the generation change is a firm fitment break.
Within a generation, FWD versus AWD, engine, trim and GM suspension codes can change the part. GM lists several different 2021 front struts depending on suspension code and side. Listings here note details such as LS FWD with the 2.4L LEA or 1.5L LYX engine. Confirm driver or passenger side, and use your VIN when you can.
Signs of worn Equinox struts
Oil on the strut body means the seal has failed. Worn struts also show up as extra bouncing after bumps, nose-dive when braking, more body roll in turns and a loose feel on rough pavement. Cupped tire wear can follow, though alignment and other worn parts can cause it too.
A clunk over bumps often comes from the upper mount, bearing, spring seat or stabilizer link rather than the strut itself. A sagging or broken coil spring, torn dust boot or crushed bump stop is also a good reason to replace the whole assembly instead of the strut alone.
Installing Equinox front struts
A bare strut means compressing the coil spring and moving it and the mount over, which needs a proper spring compressor. A loaded assembly from Monroe, Moog or Gabriel comes complete and avoids that step. The Detroit Axle kit adds sway bar links as well. Replace front struts in pairs.
Removal involves the wheel, the stabilizer link, the brake hose bracket, the knuckle bolts and the upper mount nuts. GM lists the stabilizer link seals as an inspection point, and the link should be replaced if it was damaged. Support the vehicle on jack stands, torque fasteners to the factory values for your year, and get a wheel alignment afterward.

Equinox questions
Does the Chevy Equinox have rear struts?
No. In the 2005-2021 years covered here, the Equinox uses struts at the front and separate shock absorbers at the rear. Search for rear shocks if your rear suspension needs work.
Do AWD and FWD Equinox models use the same front struts?
Not always. Drive type, engine, trim and GM suspension codes can each change the strut, especially on 2018-2021 models. Check the fitment table and your VIN before ordering.
Do I need an alignment after replacing Equinox struts?
Yes. Separating the strut from the steering knuckle can change the front geometry, so a wheel alignment is recommended after front strut replacement on the Equinox.
