Fits 2000–2001 models
The 1998-2003, 2004-2007 and 2008-2012 Malibu generations each package the engine bay differently, so a pulley for one generation should not be assumed to fit another. Within a generation, the engine sets the belt routing and pulley hardware. Check whether you have a four-cylinder such as the 2.2L or 2.4L, or a V6 such as the 3.1L, 3.5L or 3.9L.
Some engines use more than one idler, and listings name the position, such as upper or main drive, or the surface, grooved or smooth. Compare diameter, width, ribbed or smooth face and the bolt or stud setup with your old pulley and the routing diagram under the hood.
A worn bearing makes the pulley chirp, squeal, grind or wobble. With the belt off, a bad pulley feels rough, gritty or loose when you spin it by hand. A pulley that is out of line can also make the belt walk off center or fray at the edges.
The same noises can come from the belt, the automatic tensioner, the alternator or the A/C compressor, so check each one. If the belt comes off, you can lose A/C, see a charging warning or lose power steering assist on some engines. High mileage and a belt change are good times to inspect the idler and tensioner together.
Make sure you are buying the right type of part. A fixed idler pulley, an automatic tensioner pulley and a complete tensioner are not the same thing. If several drive parts are worn, a kit such as the Gates or Dayco serpentine belt drive kits listed here can cover the belt, idler and tensioner at once.
To replace the pulley, release the tensioner, slip the belt off, unbolt the old pulley and fit the new one. Reinstall the belt to the routing diagram. Replace a belt that is cracked or oil-soaked. Before starting the engine, check that every rib is seated, then confirm the belt tracks in the center.
Read our accessory belt idler pulleys buying guide for how the part works and what to look for in any vehicle.
An idler pulley is fixed and only guides the belt. A tensioner pulley rides on a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight. They are not interchangeable, so read each listing to confirm which one it is.
It varies by engine. Some listings here name an upper, main drive, grooved or smooth pulley, which shows certain engines use more than one. Check your belt routing diagram and the fitment table.
Inspect it while it is off. Replace the belt if it is cracked, glazed, oil-soaked or damaged. Many owners replace the belt, idler and tensioner together with a drive kit.
