Malibu rotor fitment by generation

Rotor fitment changes with each Malibu generation: 2003-2007, 2008-2012, 2013-2015 and 2016-2023. Even inside a generation the brake package matters. On 2004-2008 cars, GM brake codes J66 and J67 call for different parts, so year alone is not enough. The 2013 model year is a changeover, and 2016 rotors can differ from 2017-2023 rotors.

Pick front or rear first, since they never interchange, and confirm whether your car has rear discs or rear drums. Then compare outside diameter, thickness, hat height and lug count with your old rotor. Standard rotors are not left or right handed unless the listing says the design is directional.

When Malibu rotors need replacing

Rotors wear thinner with every pad change. Once a rotor is below its minimum thickness stamped on the part, or is deeply scored, cracked, heat-damaged or badly rusted, replace it. A rotor with too much runout causes a pulsing brake pedal or a shaking steering wheel when you stop.

Grinding noise, visible grooves and reduced braking are other signs. Before you blame the rotors, rule out a seized caliper. A sticking caliper can make the car pull, leave one wheel hot with a burning smell and keep braking after you release the pedal, and it will ruin new rotors quickly.

Rotors alone or a pad kit

Replace rotors in axle pairs. A single rotor listing usually means one piece, so order two for the axle. Fresh pads belong with new rotors when the old pads are worn or contaminated, and a pad and rotor kit, such as the DuraGo front kits listed here, gives you both in one order. AC Delco, Raybestos and Wagner offer single rotors if your pads are new.

Clean the hub face of rust before you mount the new rotor so it sits flat, and remove any protective coating the maker asks you to clean off. Inspect the caliper slides and hoses at the same time. Support the car on jack stands, and bed in the pads after the job.

Malibu questions

Do Malibu brake rotors come as a pair?

Most single rotor listings are for one rotor, while kits may include two rotors and pads. Check the quantity in each listing and plan to replace both rotors on the same axle.

What are J66 and J67 on a Malibu brake listing?

They are GM brake option codes. On 2004-2008 Malibu applications they can call for different rotors, so check the brake code on your car's service parts label or use the VIN before you order.

Does a 2016 Malibu use the same rotors as a 2017-2023 model?

Not always. Some rotor listings cover 2016-2023, but others are listed separately for 2016 and for 2017-2023. Confirm your exact year and trim in the fitment table.
