Engine, cab and tank fitment
S10 fuel pump fitment varies by year, engine, fuel system and tank or module design, so 1985-2003 is not one application. Fitment samples here include the 1.9L and 2.2L four-cylinder and the 4.3L V6, with some pumps limited to standard, extended or crew cab trucks.
Some listings get very specific. One 2.2L pump and sender assembly is for a 20 gallon tank with listed harness codes. Another is for 4.3L crew cabs only, and some note a 117.9 inch wheelbase. Check your VIN, cab, tank size and wheelbase, then compare the connector, hose ports, lock ring and sender with your old unit.
Signs your fuel pump is failing
A failing pump can leave you with a crank but no start, long cranking, loss of power, hesitation, sputtering, surging or stalling. A loud whine or hum from the tank is another clue, and low fuel pressure may set a check engine light.
A clogged fuel filter can cause the same symptoms, so check it and test fuel pressure before you replace the pump. On later S10s the pump sits inside the tank, so a correct diagnosis saves a lot of work.
Assembly or pump only
Decide whether you want a complete module or the pump motor alone. A module can include the pump, fuel level sender, strainer and check valve. A pump-only repair means reusing your sender.
Disconnect the battery and relieve fuel pressure before you start, and treat fuel as a fire hazard. On later trucks, you reach the pump by lowering the tank or raising or removing the bed. Replace the strainer, which comes with most modules, and change the fuel filter at the same time. Check the lock ring, O-ring, wiring, hoses and tank straps while everything is open.

S10 questions
Do I have to drop the tank to change an S10 fuel pump?
On later S10s, you either lower the tank or raise or remove the bed to reach the pump at the top of the tank. The bed method avoids dropping a tank that holds fuel.
Should I replace the fuel filter with my S10 fuel pump?
Yes, it is a good idea. A clogged filter can cause the same symptoms as a failing pump and can strain the new one. Replace the pump strainer too.
Does the S10 fuel pump come with the sending unit?
Some do. A complete assembly may include the sender, strainer and check valve, while a pump-only listing does not. Read the product details before ordering.
