Matching rotors to your Ram

The Ram 1500 changes a lot across these years. 1994-2001 trucks are the older body, 2002-2008 trucks are the next, and 2009-2010 trucks are a separate generation again. A rotor for one group is not a safe bet for another. Even 1994-1999 and 2000-2001 trucks should be checked separately.

On the front, 2WD and 4WD Ram 1500 trucks often use different rotors. Axle, wheel and lug setup and heavy-duty brake packages can also change the size. Before you order a rear rotor, confirm your truck has rear disc brakes, because some use drums. Compare diameter, thickness and bolt pattern in the listing with your truck.

Rotor wear and pulsation

The most common Ram complaint is a pulse in the pedal or a shake in the steering wheel when you brake. That points to uneven thickness, runout or pad deposits on the rotor. Deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust pitting, hot spots and blue heat marks are other reasons to replace.

Grinding usually means the pads wore through and steel is cutting into the rotor. Do not call a rotor warped from feel alone. Measure thickness against the minimum and check runout, and look at the calipers, wheel bearings and hub face too.

Pairs, pads and fitting

Replace rotors in axle pairs and fit new pads at the same time unless your pads are fresh. Many listings are a single rotor, so order two. The Detroit Axle front kit and TRQ front and rear kit bundle pads and rotors for one order. Most plain rotors fit either side, but drilled or slotted rotors can be directional.

With the truck on jack stands, remove the caliper and old rotor, then clean all rust from the hub face. Leftover scale can cause runout and bring the pulsation back. Check the caliper slide pins and hoses, torque the lug nuts to spec, and bed in the new pads.

Ram 1500 questions

Do 2WD and 4WD Ram 1500 trucks use the same front rotors?

Often not. Many Ram 1500 years list different front rotors for 2WD and 4WD trucks. Pick your drivetrain in the fitment table to see the correct rotor for your year.

Does my Ram 1500 have rear brake rotors?

It depends on the year and equipment. Some Ram 1500 trucks have rear discs and others use rear drums. Look behind a rear wheel before ordering, and buy a rear rotor only if you see a caliper.

Should I replace pads with Ram 1500 rotors?

Yes, in most cases. New rotors with old pads wear unevenly and may still pulse. Replace pads with the rotors unless they were installed recently and are in good shape.
